All About the PMP Certification

March 20th, 2010

When I was a kid I hated seeing those signs at festivals that read “you must be this big to ride this ride.” Of course, I was always just under the minimum requirements. Bummer! It’s no fun to spend a summer trapped between the kiddie rides and the lusty tilt-a-whirl that all of your buddies are barfing on.

But those signs were there for a reason – besides making little pudgy kids like me furious – and the reason was safety. Today I wouldn’t dare go on one of those deathtrap thrill rides – height requirements or not. Any carnival ride that can be dismantled, hauled to Sioux City, Iowa overnight, and reassembled in half an hour is not for me.

When I talk to people about the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification I often think about those carnival rides. The may not have height requirements, but it does have eligibility requirements. Not everyone can sit the exam – and not everyone that sits the exam can pass it.

If you’re not familiar with the PMP, I’ll give you a rundown. PMP is a certification that proves that the project manager who acquires it has years of project management experience, education, and has passed an exam that tests their project management knowledge. It’s not specific to any particular industry, so you’ll likely find PMPs with backgrounds in IT, construction, manufacturing, and health care.

I think the Project Management Institute (adoringly called PMI), the organization that owns the , has learned a thing or two from other certifications over the past decade. For starters, by making candidates qualify for the certification it adds genuine value to the title. Being a PMP immediately shows experience, education, and project management knowledge.

Starting the PMP Process

The requirements also helps avoid the plague of paper certifications we’ve endured over past years. A long time ago, I was a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. I earned my title starting with Windows NT 3.51, and then Windows NT 4.0, 95, and then it just snowballed. I was flooded with opportunity and it was great. But, before too long, being an MCSE

was suddenly no big deal. I knew things weren’t good for Microsoft, and the IT world in general, when I saw a waiter wearing his MCSE lapel pin while working at Denny’s. I didn’t ask for details – just coffee and pie.

So, in order to sit for the PMP examination you must qualify. Here’s a quick breakdown of the various requirements.

If you have a bachelor’s degree:

  1. You need 36 non-overlapping months of project management experience within the last eight years. That non-overlapping part means that if you worked on six projects throughout the month of January that only counts as one month of project management work, not six months.
  2. Your project management experience, all projects included, must total at least 4,500 hours, and all within the past eight years.
  3. You must complete at least 35 hours of project management training. There’s no time limit on this educational requirement, so college courses and online courses qualify.
  4. You have to promise to abide by the PMP Code of Professional Conduct. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sign it in blood and the confines of the code are probably things you’re already doing. Mafia aside.
  5. You must pass the exam with a score of 61 percent or better. (I’m hoping you do better, but rest assured it’s a pass or fail exam).

If you have high school diploma, an associate degree, or global equivalent:

  1. You need 60 non-overlapping months of project management experience. Again, one month of project management work equates to just one month, regardless of the number of projects you worked on during that month.
  2. You must log a total of 7,500 hours of project management experience over the past eight years.
  3. You must complete 35 contact hours of project management training. Contact hours means that the training must be interactive. You can’t just read a book, this article, or consider on-the-job training and claim your hours. Web-based training, however, is now being accepted as interactive.
  4. You must agree to abide by the PMP Code of Professional Conduct.
  5. You must pass the PMP examination with at least a 61 percent score.

pmp All About the PMP Certification

Applying for the Exam

The fee for the examination isn’t cheap: $405 for PMI members and $555 for non-PMI members. Guess what? It’s actually cheaper to join PMI and then complete your application, as their membership fee is $129. Besides, as a member you also get some added benefits such as newsletters, magazines, and other .

Beware, completing the PMP application is about as much fun as a root canal. My advice is to complete your application through PMI’s website where you can pause, resume, and edit the application at your convenience until you’re ready to submit it. On the PMP application, you’ll have to document all of your education, experience, and the details of the projects you’ve completed. In addition, you’ll have to provide contact information for your supervisors and managers that can verify (uh, that’s vouch for you) the experience you say you’ve gotten on the projects you’ve listed.

PMI can take up to fourteen days to approve your application, though most of the applicants I’ve trained report a speedy response. Within those fourteen days, PMI may elect to audit your application for verification.

This is not fun.

If chosen, you’ll have to provide PMI with proof of your experience, your education, and your project management training. This means you’ll have to track down old bosses and get confirmation letters of your experience, photocopy your degrees, and provide your training certificates. I’ve known a few folks that have gone through the audit with no problems other than an extra helping of anxiety as they prepare to pass their examination.

Passing the Examination

Once your application is approved, PMI will send you a letter with a confirmation code, which you’ll then provide to a Prometric testing center. Be advised that these Prometric testing centers aren’t the same cozy testing centers where you took your Microsoft and CompTIA exams. These centers are secured environments where you’ll check-in with two pieces of valid ID, stash your belongings in a locker (where they’ll remain until you’re ready to leave), and take your exam in a proctored room. In addition, you’ll be monitored by more than one video camera in the testing environment. (You’d better comb your hair and sit up straight.)

The PMP exam consists of 200 questions and must be completed within four hours. Ready for a twist? Of the 200 questions only 175 actually count towards your grade. The 25-mystery questions are seeded throughout the exam to determine their overall worthiness for future PMP examinations. Can you say “guinea pig?”

Getting Some PMP Help

There are many different resources available to help you prepare for the , here are some top choices:

1. The PMP Study Guide by Joseph Phillips; ISBN: 0072262907. Hey, that’s my book! Yep, I’m plugging my book as your best choice. I use this book to teach both my live and online PMP Boot Camps. It works! It’s now in its second edition – go get it. Now.

2. A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge from PMI; ISBN: 193069945X. No matter which resources you use to study for your exam you’ll want for the simple reason that it’s the book the exam is centered on. Two insider tips: Just call this book the PMBOK (pronounced Pim-Bach) and don’t read it far from your pillow.

3. PMP Exam Cram2 by Michael Soloman; ISBN 0789734621. I’ve heard great things about this book (and the entire Exam Cram series). This book is loaded with PMP exam facts, quizzes, and exam tips. And it’s from Pearson Education, which InformIT.com is a part of, so I’d better mention it, right?

There’s also a bevy of online resources:

  • http://www.pmpinabox.com: where you can download a free 25-question PMP assessment exam or buy their online offerings.
  • http://www.college-net.com/boston.asp: where you can complete an online project management course.
  • http://www.pmi.org: where you can find all of the details, application requirements, exam objectives, and complete your exam application.

After the Exam

Once you’ve completed your certification you’ll also have to continue your education by obtaining at least 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) over a three-year span. A PDU equates to one hour and you can earn these by attending PMI events, completing training through PMI Registered Education Providers, or by volunteering at PMI events.

The requirements, like those carnival rides, aren’t meant to make you furious. They exist to protect the value of your certification and add worth to a title that’s not easy to achieve.

Exam 70-680 Is Easy

February 22nd, 2010

Several testers have taken Microsoft’s 70-680 , and found it to be less than challenging.
The test is titled "MCTS: Windows 7, Configuring." The exam came out in beta (i.e. pre-release) form on June 1. Greg Shields, a founder of the tech Website Concentrated Technology, had this to say:

"Let me give you my initial impression in just a few words: Embarrasingly easy."

Shields is concerned that the exam in its current form doesn’t test enough real-world knowledge:

"I have to say that I’m fairly unimpressed with the difficultly in this beta, or the content it tests upon. If the final exam is simply a snipping of this beta’s large sample of questions, I worry that it might not do a good job of effectively testing who really knows their stuff in configuring Windows 7."

A software developer who goes by the name Eralper had this to say:

"I believe if you have enough knowledge on the general you will complete the 70-680 in a short time."

These comments should send up a red flag for Microsoft. It has dealt with concerns in the past about exams being too easy, which ultimately devalues the certification upon which it’s based. Of course, that’s why there are ; Microsoft will hopefully take the feedback seriously (it usually does) and adjust the tests accordingly.
Microsoft says that the exam, when it’s live, will count toward the following :

  • MCITP: Enterprise Administrator
  • MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator 7
  • MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician

No More Paper Certificates For Microsoft Exams..??

February 22nd, 2010

Got a mail from Microsoft that the Microsoft is going to create the Green Earth, so all the Microsoft exams written before June 30 2009 alone are eligible for certificates, after that only E-Certificates will be provided. If you need paper certificate then you need to pay them in addition. This is really a sad news from Microsoft. Most of the FAQ are answered here.

My MCP Certificate

Won’t it cost me a fortune to have the certificate mailed to my country? No—our number one requirement from the start was that our certificates—should you still choose to order them—be affordable to ship anywhere in the world. We’ll have our shipping costs published soon, but we don’t anticipate significantly higher shipping costs internationally. (We’re using a different vendor than our MCP E-Store (which I agree is way too exorbitant on shipping costs… we’re working on that).

We use A4 paper in my country, but your certificates are 8-1/2 x 11. How do I print my certificates correctly? We actually provide A4 versions of the digital certificates now—go check them out!

Why don’t I see my charter certificates? We don’t keep records of —those charter certificates are simply the first x number of certificates that we mailed out to the people who earned those certifications. If you were to re-order one of those certificates today (or last week, or last month), you’d find that you’d get a “standard” certificate rather than a charter one (unless we still happened to have some charter certificates left), and the digital certificates work the same way.

Will you ever issue charter certificates again? Maybe. We decided that on a case-by-case basis. If we do, we’ll also make sure we take into account how digital fulfillment works in those cases.

Why didn’t you make welcome kits opt-in only, so that environmentally concerned customers could decided for themselves? We did—for the last few years! Almost everyone ordered certificates though (myself included), in part because they’re free. I find myself ordering things I probably wouldn’t otherwise when they’re free. With a modest shipping and handling fee, we expect that more folks will opt-out than before.

How is this environmentally friendly if all it means is that the MCP has to do the printing instead of Microsoft? See above—if everyone prints out their certificates, then yeah, there’s a good chance that overall we’re doing more harm than good to the environment. But we don’t believe that will happen. I don’t know what percentage of folks will print their certificates, but I think it will decline steadily over time.

Won’t this lead to fraudulent certificates? Don’t look now, but it’s actually not that hard to find places on the Internet who will send you authentic-looking but counterfeit certificates and wallet cards today. The fact is, you can’t trust a paper certificate, and frankly, I wouldn’t trust a digital one either. The only thing I’d trust is our launching-in-August virtual business cards, which authenticate your credentials against your transcript, making them pretty darn difficult to forge.

Are you going to lower the price for exams since you’re now saving money on the welcome kits? No, we won’t, but: remember that we haven’t raised our prices in eight years. Tell me another vendor whose exams are priced as low as we are and can say that. We could have simply raised our prices a bit, but then everyone would be paying extra, not just the people who want paper certificates. This way seems more equitable to us: if you’re satisfied with digital credentials, your exams cost the same; if you want a paper certificate, you’ll pay a modest shipping and handling fee.

How would you feel if your college or university told you that after four years, you had to pay an extra fee to get your diploma? I’d be pretty ticked off, because I probably just spent up to $200,000 USD and invested 4 full-time years of my life studying. I’d probably also question the rationale, since my college only issues about 400 diplomas a year, and they’re handed out in person rather than packaged in cardboard and shipped on airplanes and trucks around the world. I understand the analogy many of you are trying to draw, but in fairness I don’t think that many of you are spending that kind of money and time earning our certifications. I love that you take such pride in your accomplishments—and I share it as an MCP/MCT many times over since 1993—but with all due respect and IMHO, we’re talking about different levels of investment here.

Frequently Leveled Accusations

Microsoft isn’t concerned about the environment—this is just a cost-cutting measure in disguise. This is what’s known as a false choice: that something must be either one thing or another, and not both. This is absolutely a way for us to save on our costs (without raising our prices)—no doubt about that. But it’s also and primarily a way for us to cut down on our environmental footprint. I realize some of you won’t believe that no matter what we say… so it’s probably not a productive use of any of our time trying to persuade each other. (Ditto for those of you arguing that global warming is a hoax.)

You don’t really care about the environment—or you wouldn’t have done that bus tour! See above, plus: there’s no doubt we’re not 100% green, and we won’t be any time soon either. But we’re making strides where we can. (I wish we could have found an electric bus!) BTW, you can take out the words “the environment” above and substitute “cutting costs” and the argument works just as well.

One final note (for now): I understand why the discussion is focused on certificates now, but the upcoming virtual business cards are going to be pretty sweet. For the first time, we’ll truly have a visual symbol of your credential that really, truly proves your accomplishments. I think you guys will dig it and appreciate the benefits it provides over paper and plastic.

Keeping Abreast of Recertification

February 21st, 2010

The end of 2008 is fast approaching, is it time to take a look at your certification deadline? The Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) remains the leading and most respected organization for certifying computing professionals. The Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) is just one of ICCP’s prestigious certifications. There are annual dues which vary depending on the certification earned and candidates must recertify every three years. Briefly stated here, the reasons for recertification are posted on the website:

The ICCP Recertification Program has three major goals:

· Maintain professional competence;

· Update existing knowledge and skills;

· Attain additional knowledge and skills.

Understanding the process early on makes for a smooth recertification every three years. The requirements can be fulfilled over time from the day you receive your initial certification. This is more to your advantage than scrambling in the last quarter to meet deadlines. There are a variety of ways to meet the 120 recertification hours and ICCP offers terrific options which are also posted on the website:

Certification renewal may be accomplished through various kinds of professional development:

· By expanding your certification Specialties with new examinations;

· Through re-examination in your existing area of expertise;

· By participating in educational and other professional activities.

A great way to earn credit is by submitting certification exam questions and any certified professional is qualified. Refer to the Item Writers Guide for specifics and select an exam you wish to contribute to. Visit the recertification page for further details. Happy recertifying!

Understand the idea behind CSQA

February 19th, 2010

The Certified Software Quality Analyst () certification is undoubtedly one of the best certifications available in the IT profession. But the level of awareness about is very limited among the Software community compared to many other software certifications. Probably this may be due to the low awareness and myths about Quality Assurance.

Here I would like to say something about examination.

According to the CBOK, this examination is actually designed to test the ability of a professional understanding both the principles and practices of good quality management. The bookish knowledge from the CBOK will only help in understanding the vocabulary, concepts & principles of quality. According to many certified professionals, most of the Objective papers of examination are from the basic concepts & principles of CBOK. Where as the practice of these principles are tested in the Subjective Papers.

For example, there may be objective questions related to Deming’s Principles. Coming to the Subjective papers, the question can be asked as (infact it is a recent question):

Deming Stresses in “Drive out fear”. As a QA Manager how will you
drive out fear. Explain briefly.

This is how the candidate’s ability to face real world challenges are tested.

So, my sincere advise to all the aspirants is to go for the certification in a planned manner so that by the exam time, you have adequate real world exposure to QA practices. Some may be worrying if doing the certification is difficult after the new CBOK is introduced. This is purely a myth. Never worry for the study materials. Infact the new CBOK has few additional concepts along with the concepts in the current version of the CBOK. In this global village, it is never a tough task to find out the relavent material. All you need is . Go for the certification in a way to learn & apply the QA principles in the day to day QA operations, apart from getting certified; not for the purpose of just getting certified. Why dont you choose to go for two birds at one shot? In fact, that is the basic idea behind !!
