Cockney Translation

The Cockney accent is fading and being replaced with a hybrid of London and Bangladeshi accents in parts of East London, it’s claimed in research by Sue Fox of Queen Mary University.

In her research, Fox has studied changing accents and dialect in a youth club in Tower Hamlets over a 9 month period and found that a new generation of Bangladeshi-influenced dialect has grown and spread into the speech patterns of many young East Londoners, Asian, white and black alike.

As Julie points out in her Language Legend blog, it’s interesting to see how this change of dialect is represented in the media. Many see the fading of cockney as a terrible loss to British culture, while others treat the dialect as a bizarre and unfathomable anachronism (much as they do the white working class who use it, I suppose).

In an article in The Daily Telegraph the spread of Bangla-dialect is even couched in terms of an invasion, getting a bit “Infectious Disease” model on us (Jean Aitchison fans, take note!).

While Sue Fox’s research is fascinating in its depth and detail (and we hope to get her to speak at our next Language Conference in 2006!) this sort of language change is nothing new, just part of a wider pattern of immigration, demographic shifts and linguistic accommodation.

On the day these articles were printed, we were on holiday in Italy staying with friends who are big reggae fans. As luck would have it, one of the records I heard that day was Smiley Culture’s Cockney Translation, a hit from the early 1980s which blends cockney rhyming slang and Jamaican slang into a witty commentary on shared culture in London. I’ve tried to track down the lyrics on google with no luck as yet, so if someone can find them I’d be grateful, but there are some great lines in the song which show just how normal the blending of cultures and languages is in youth culture.

Harvard scientists predict the future of the past tense

Verbs evolve and homogenize at a rate inversely proportional to their prevalence in the English language, according to a formula developed by Harvard University mathematicians who’ve invoked evolutionary principles to study our language over the past 1,200 years, from “Beowulf” to “Canterbury Tales” to “Harry Potter.”

The researchers tracked the status of 177 irregular verbs in Old English through linguistic changes in Middle English and then modern English. Of these 177 verbs that were irregular 1,200 years ago, 145 stayed irregular in Middle English and just 98 remain irregular today, following the regularization over the centuries of such verbs as help, laugh, reach, walk, and work.
Extant irregular verbs represent the vestiges of long-abandoned rules of conjugation; new verbs entering English, such as “google,” are universally regular. Although fewer than 3 percent of modern English verbs are irregular, this number includes the 10 most common verbs: be, have, do, go, say, can, will, see, take, and get.
They expect that some 15 of the 98 modern irregular verbs they studied will regularize in the next 500 years.banner Breaking  NEWS!

Blind search

Michael Kordahi from Microsoft Australia has created a rather interesting website which lets a user test which web search service that they prefer. Currently the site let a person search for a term and the site returns 3 columns that are in random order, and have a uniform layout that represent bing, google and yahoo search results.

Reading Comprehension


The function of capital markets is to facilitate an exchange of funds among all participants, and yet in practice we find that certain participants are not on a par with others. Members of society have varying degrees of market strength in terms of information they bring to a transaction, as well as of purchasing power and creditworthiness, as defined by lenders.
For example, within minority communities, capital markets do not properly fulfill their functions; they do not provide access to the aggregate flow of funds in the United States. The financial system does not generate the credit or investment vehicles needed for underwriting economic development in minority areas. The problem underlying this dysfunction is found in a rationing mechanism affecting both the available alternatives for investment and the amount of financial resources. This creates a distributive mechanism penalizing members of minority groups because of their socioeconomic differences from others. The existing system expresses definite socially based investment preferences that result from the previous allocation of income and that influence the allocation of resources for the present and future. The system tends to increase the inequality of income distribution. And, in the United States economy, a greater inequality of income distribution leads to a greater concentration of capital in certain types of investment.
Most traditional financial-market analysis studies ignore financial markets” deficiencies in allocation because of analysts”  inherent preferences for the simple model of perfect competition. Conventional financial analysis pays limited attention to issues of market structure and dynamics, relative costs of information, and problems of income distribution. Market participants are viewed as acting as entirely independent and homogeneous individuals with perfect foresight about capital-market behavior. Also, it is assumed that each individual in the community at large has the same access to the market and the same opportunity to transact and to express the preference appropriate to his or her individual interest. Moreover, it is assumed that transaction costs for various types of financial instruments (stocks, bonds, etc.) are equally known and equally divided among all community members.

Internet Explorer 8 beta 2

Download Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2I would like to suggest that anyone that does web development or just interested in new browsers have a look at internet explorer 8. This is probably the most ground breaking version of internet explore since the browser wars of internet explorer and Netscape. The new application includes several unique prices of functionality such as accelerates, these are little add- such as page translation, and email from web clients that give you quick access (right click) to useful pieces of software.

There are also some much hyped addition such as privacy mode and web slices which give you very similar functionality to Google reader, however since this information is maintained on you local computer then Microsoft or Google does not have you functionality.

This release is also meant to be more compliant with w3 standards, while in the same time it provides a features the lets you see website in ‘compatibility mode, that is based on the rendering engine of previous internet explorers.

Worldwide Telescope

Hubble searches for dark matter Microsoft research released the worldwide telescope recently and this is a program that really make me say WOW, in a similar way as when I saw Google maps for the first time.

This program in its essence is similar to many of maps programs out there where you can find an image of the world and then zoom in till you get to a house level. So for me it is surprising after Google was first over the line with Google Maps and Google Mars, Microsoft releases the Worldwide Telescope.

The program lets us explore space and the universe in a way that static images that we see in books or find on the internet just cannot compare with. There are also guided ‘tour’ of the universe for those of us that do not have a degree in astronomy.

We can also explore other including during the day or night, the night sky as we can see it from telescopes, and also  images from probes that have left , including the Mars Landers.
